We went to out-patient therapy for the first time today. Considering this accident only happened 3 weeks ago, my previous sentance is a miracle, in and of itself. Each of his therapists were very clear about this with us and let us know just how well he is doing. His speedy recovery gives every indication for a full recovery.
His physical therapist did lots of exams on him and then had him play with a soccer ball and basket ball. When he did these things you could definitely tell that his coordination and endurance were lacking. They did place him at a "functional level" in his recovery. This basically means that he is capable of being independent, but he just has to work toward fine tuning his movements and getting back to where he was prior to the accident. They think that this should take 3 hours of therapy a week for the next 1-2 months
His occupational therapist said that the main thing that he is going to work with him on is getting back to being able to drive. He said that he predicts that, as long as all goes well, he will be able to be back to driving in about 1 month. (just in time for the baby)
His speech therapist has explained that she is going to work this him on implementing some strategies to help him to compensate for his short term memory loss. She wants to have him start keeping a journal and carrying a planner with him, so that he can take notes of everything throughout his day and become less dependant on me. She is also going to work on abstract thinking, puzzles, math and other things. She thinks that she will need to work with him about 3 hours a week for 2-3 months. We really enjoyed meeting all of his therapists. They seem like they are going to be great to work with.
Dane is gone right now at Mutual with the Young Men in the ward. He did such a great job today and he felt like he was ready to get out for a bit. I'm sure he'll have a blast. The only thing that broke my heart was that Peyton cried really hard when Daddy left, even after he made sure to give her a hug and kiss goodbye. Last time that he left, he didn't come home for a while, so she was probably warranted in her crying. I hope that she'll soon understand that he's not going anywhere, anymore.
Thanks to our neighbors Jim and Michelle for helping us to find this place for his out patient rehabilitation. Thanks to Brooke and Big Riley for helping me by watching Peyton this morning so that I could go with Dane. Thanks to Shelby for taking Rylee after her half day of school for some fun at the swimming pool. she had a great time. Thanks to Shawn for taking Dane to mutual tonight. He was excited to go.
